Design and Technology
Design and Technology flourishes at Farleigh, and from Year 3, all
children are taught DT as part of the curriculum. The department
consists of a large, bright workspace where children work with a wide
range of materials.
Projects are quite tightly structured in
Years 3 and 4, in order to develop the skills and understanding on
which children can draw when the work becomes more open-ended. From
Year 5 children are given the opportunity to add some of their own
creative thinking to the designing and making process.
Experience
using a variety of materials is gained as children progress through to
Year 8. Wood, metal, plastics and textiles are the key materials used.
The range of tools and processes becomes progressively more extensive,
enabling each individual to realise their ideas into a finished quality
product.
Traditional hand skills are balanced with up-to-date
Laser cutting techniques. The use of a pencil to explore ideas is as
valuable as using the computer, and Internet. Projects encourage
children to explore different ways of realising their ideas.
In
2003 work from pupils in Year 7 was published in Designing magazine and
again, in 2006, pupils in Year 6 had the opportunity to see their work
featured in an article in the same publication. Felix (pictured) had
his work featured on the front cover of the magazine.
Children
move on from Farleigh with the knowledge and understanding to
confidently tackle the wide range of GCSE Design and Technology courses
on offer at their senior schools.
