Girls' Football

Farleigh was one of 16 teams taking part in Port Regis' annual seven-a-side girls' football tournament last week. It was the first time that these girls had played competitive football and they played with grit and determination to finish a creditable 8th overall. This was a magnificent achievement considering the amount of football our girls play.

Farleigh was placed in Pool 1 against Clayesmore 1sts, Port Regis 2nds and Sandroyd. The first match was a very closely fought contest against Sandroyd, finishing in a 1-1 draw. The girls had lots of good chances to take the lead, but eventually had to come from a goal down to claim a draw after Libby's equaliser. Our second match was against a very strong Port Regis side who controlled the game, although some great defending resulted in a well-earned 0-0 draw. The last match, against Clayesmore, was again a tightly fought match, which ended in a draw with neither team able to find the back of the net.

Port Regis finished top of the group, Clayesmore bottom, leaving Farleigh and Sandroyd to face a penalty shootout. This was a nerve wracking moment for our inexperienced team. Millie stepped up first and scored the first penalty, followed by a second from Tara. Katie found herself in goal for the shootout and she saved both of Sandroyd’s penalties, thus securing the team's position in the Plate Competition.

The Plate pitted Farleigh against Chilton Cantelo, Dumpton, and last year’s winners, Gillingham, who all finished 2nd in their respective groups. At this stage, we lost 1-0 to Chilton Cantelo and 2-0 to a strong Gillingham. Our girls played very well and conceded very late on in both games. Hoping for a win to round off what had been a fantastic day, the girls could only muster a draw against Dumpton in another close game.

Farleigh's 'Player of the Tournament' was Katie for her outstanding goalkeeping and the 'Commendation' went to Emily. A big thank you to Mr Roberts for a fun and exciting afternoon out.
