The study of history is hands on and interactive at Farleigh.
Onsite workshops and offsite trips take the children's
learning off the worksheet and out of the classroom.
This term alone, Year 2 in the Pre-Prep have visited Wellow as part of their study of the life of Florence
Nightingale and Year 1 enjoyed a workshop on the history of toys. Year 3 visited Downton Abbey
(sorry, Highclere Castle!) to see the Egyptian artefacts and costumes on display -
and to try a few on too.
Year 4 explored the local area and its links to our
ancient peoples. Butser Ancient Farm enthralled them and next week they head off to the Iron Age Museum and Danebury Hill Fort for further inspiration. Year 5 marvelled at the opulence of Henry VIII
and had a real taste of Tudor life in the kitchens of Hampton Court.
Year 6
designed propaganda posters, dressed in clothes of 1940's Britain and handled
genuine artefacts from World War II. They made gas mask boxes and
evacuation labels to understand some of what an evacuee went through and were concerned about losing their identification papers in case they were
arrested as a spy and dealt with accordingly! They also visited the Imperial
War Museum in London, which, to quote one the boys, "was totally
awesome".
Year 7 attended a Medieval workshop in the theatre where they experienced the
different aspects of life in England during this period. They tried
on Medieval style clothes, were put in the stocks and role-played the trials by
ordeal. Most were left thoroughly unimpressed by a typical peasant's diet.
It has been a superbly busy term in the History Department and we look forward to more inspirational days next term.
