Tuesday
Vive le ferry, vive la Bretagne. Fifty-five pupils set sail for Caen in Brittany from Portsmouth at 9.30am. They arrived safely after a good crossing and settled in well at Hôtel l'Abbaye. Four intrepid parents braved the wind on the ramparts of Portsmouth Harbour to unfurl the 'drapeau tricolore' for the excited children as the ferry passed.
Wednesday
After French sessions in the morning, the children visited the supermarché, braved an oyster or two, and visited the amazing Mont St Michel. They are responding well to the hotel's cuisine, and are thoroughly enjoying their meals.
Thursday
The children have 'come up trumps' with many compliments about their conduct and efforts in French. As well as the morning French sessions at L'Abbaye, the children visited La Poste to practise their French on two very patient ladies. If they were successful, parents can expect postcards in the coming days! In the afternoon, the children enjoyed a round of crazy golf under glorious blue skies, a short coastal walk, an opportunity to swim in the Olympic Pool and time to build a sandcastle on the beach in Dinard.
Friday
Vive les vacances! The weather was, once again,
beautiful and the children have had plenty of time to relax in the
hotel's garden. The morning was spent in le Rendez-Vous Français, with the
groups touring to the local tourist office where they asked for un petit
dépliant. They paraded their hats and sang lots of French songs. After a
delicious lunch at the hotel, they visited the beach at St Cast-le-Guildo, where
the children enjoyed une glace. The annual mini-olympics were held in the evening and the scores were very close. After supper, during which Tara's and Tatiana's birthdays were celebrated, Year 6 were invited into the old Chapel
by other guests to watch some local Breton dancing.
The children have responded incredibly well to the French
challenges and have had a wonderful experience.
Vive les sixièmes!
