A Holiday Helping Hand!

The holiday period provided the perfect opportunity for our potential DT and Drama scholars to come in and use the facilities at length! With no school bell or timetabled lessons to dictate the day, they were able to concentrate solely on the practical aspect of their work.

Mr Tween’s potential DT scholars each elected to produce some furniture with the message of recycling at the heart of its theme.

Susie completed her ‘river table’, using layers of plywood for a topographical river bed and topped with resin to represent water. Embedded within the rising are small pieces of plastic which are only really noticeable on closer inspection. It represents the way in which plastic waste has entered our eco systems.

Magnus used some shell casings his father picked up after a shoot. His table shows that these expired casings can be upcycled and used as part of something new. They add a unique finish to the table and form an excellent talking point!

Magnus also came in to help Mr Hession in the Drama department, making stage props and doing a fantastic job of painting the School of Rock boxes black, so they can be re-used in another production. He then made a grisly costume with a half-dagger protruding from it, to make it appear that the actor has been stabbed in the back. Look out for our forthcoming production of Psycho (just kidding, parents!).

A group of our potential Drama scholars jumped to Mr Hession’s request for help at short notice and came in to tidy the Theatre. Summer, Amelie, Jasmine, Rosie and Johnny did a fantastic job on the unenviable task of carrying the unusable parts of the old set to the school skip, tidying the backstage areas and costume room, sorting through costumes for the forthcoming Year 6 production of Mary Poppins and packing up and storing the Singin’ in the Rain costumes, prop and set. It was a big task and their help was invaluable. As always with the ‘invisible’ work, so much was learned about the business of Theatre in the process!
