An Amazing Senior Wessex Athletics & Cricket Achievements Round-Up

We always measure ourselves very carefully at Farleigh, totally aware of the strength of our competitors and mindful to be modest in the face of all achievements, knowing it is one person's day one week and another's the next. However, the recent sporting achievements of Farleigh pupils have been quite outstanding. It is important that the whole school community sees what these children are achieving, both locally and nationally.

This year the senior boys' and girls' cricket teams are entered into the Hampshire County Cup and the IAPS National competitions. Both these competitions are rounds based, so if you win, you progress to the next stage. Our U11A Girls' cricket team won the Hampshire County Cup. The U12A Boys are playing in the cricket county final today against Twyford and the U13 Boys are in the county semi-final against Portsmouth Grammar School next week.

In the IAPS national cricket competitions, both the girls' and boys' teams have progressed to the finals. The girls are playing in Shrewsbury, having beaten Westbourne House in the last round, and the boys are playing in York, having beaten Taunton and Millfield to progress to this stage. This is a phenomenal achievement for both teams on a national level.

In athletics last week, we hosted the Farleigh Athletics, with approximately 400 athletes from seven other schools including Cheam, Daneshill, Pilgrims’, Pinewood, Port Regis, Twyford and Yateley Manor taking part. Farleigh children performed exceptionally in the face of such competition, to win both the girls' and boys' events.

On Saturday, the Year 3-5s attended the Junior Wessex Athletics competition with 20 other schools. Farleigh were superb and showcased a lot of talent in the younger ages.

Yesterday, we took the senior group (Years 6-8) to the Senior Wessex Athletics at the King's Stadium in Bournemouth, to compete against 23 other schools. Farleigh were phenomenal and, once again, produced amazing results, with approximately 30 athletes now progressing to the National finals in Nuneaton on the 3rd July. Willow H and Florrie M were placed in the top two positions for three individual events and Henry W was named Best Male Athlete at the competition, having won the 100m, 200m, triple jump and brought home the relay team to victory.

Mr Ralph kindly did some stats for me and worked out that 85% of the Farleigh athletes finished in the top three positions for their events. Further results follow below from yesterday's athletics:

This has been an incredible term for both cricket and athletics, and we should celebrate the achievements of these young people. It is not always like this, so when we have this level of success it should be celebrated by all.
