Hockey is Flying at Farleigh

We have had a wonderful hockey season! There have been some brilliant results in fixtures and both boys and girls are enthusiastically signing up to do hockey after school, which bodes well for the future.

The 1st team had an incredible unbeaten season including wins over Cheam, Lambrook and Twyford. At the IAPS regional qualifying at King’s Bruton, the team played phenomenally well to win the whole tournament ahead of Clifton, Millfield and Taunton. Sadly, an outbreak of Covid in Year 8 at Farleigh meant that we were unable to take part in the IAPS National Finals, which was, understandably, a huge disappointment for the girls.

Miss Smith says, ‘It has been such a joy to coach these girls from U11 to U13 and the 1st team, and witnessing them play their best hockey against some of the strongest schools on our circuit has been incredibly rewarding. I have no doubt that they will all go on to make a significant contribution to sport at their senior schools.’

To round off our hockey season fixtures, we welcomed Orwell Park, a touring team from Suffolk. First up were the 2nd and 3rd teams who each played extremely well and Farleigh won both matches comfortably. The 1st's played under the lights; Orwell Park were strong and they took an early lead. Not happy to go down without a fight, the girls worked hard and levelled the score. A last-minute goal gave Farleigh the win - a fitting way to end a very memorable season.

In a highly anticipated finale to the girls’ hockey season, our talented 1st team played phenomenally well against a Farleigh staff team who weren’t too shabby themselves! The girls played in their characteristic fast-paced style, pushing the staff all the way.

And the result (….drum roll…)? 4-3 to the staff, who just edged it in a really exciting, fun and competitive fixture. A little face saved for their teachers, but the girls gave them a serious run for their money – what a way to sign out for Christmas!
