Mathematical Minds

Last term, in response to school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, the UK Mathematics Trust made the Junior Mathematical Challenge 2020 available online. For the first time, pupils throughout England and Wales were able to sit the Challenge at home and these unusual circumstances proved more of a challenge for all concerned, as so much relied upon independent study and confidence with the technology.

From Farleigh, 31 pupils in Year 7 (now Year 8) and 16 pupils from amongst our Year 8 leavers chose to take part in the Maths Challenge on 25th June, working remotely and invigilated in Zoom classrooms. Six of our Year 7 pupils and three of our Year 8 pupils achieved Bronze awards and two Silvers were awarded in Year 8:

Bronze 70+   < 86         Silver 86+   <102

Year 7/new Year 8 (Bronze): Mia Henderson (best in year), Zam Spurrier, William Perry, Rory Magnay, Rosie Harvie-Watt and Fred Hosier

Year 8 leavers (Bronze): Harry Frisby, Rupert Balmain and Rodrigo Ruiz-Morales

Year 8 leavers (Silver): Tristan Evans (best in school) and Charlie Perry

All who participated are not only Junior Mathematical Challenge pioneers but deserve praise for rising to the task in very difficult circumstances. Well done to all.
