Music for the Screen

From Pearl and Dean to the Golden Globes, almost everything about the Silver Screen evokes the feeling of something special, sparkling and glamorous. So, when we programme a concert of music celebrating music written for the movies, we know it will be special and last Friday’s ‘Music for the Screen’ concert was a gem indeed.

These evening performances in the Recital Hall have a different ambience to other concerts, more formal certainly, but there is a warmth and an intimacy which inspires the children to reach new heights. A packed audience featuring many former pupils enjoyed music from across the decades of film history: with romances, cartoons, the Wild West, film-musicals, comedies and action movies too, barely a genre was left untouched. Ensemble performances from Highly Strung, Girls’ Close Harmony and Senior BrassWorks, were complimented by an energetic jazz combo, a moving duet performed by Flo T and Flora B with beautiful solos from Archie C, Atticus E, Amelia G, Scarlett P, Scarlett K, William W, and Molly B.

For the final pièce de résistance, we were all treated to a live performance from Five Foot Six who performed live to a Keystone Kops film. I cannot think of another school in the country which would be able to present such an authentic cinema experience. Who needs ‘talkies’?!

My deepest thanks to all those who made our first ‘formal’ concert of the academic year such a memorable and enjoyable occasion, these ‘memory makers’ are the real heroes who enable these lucky children to shine so impressively. They all deserve their very own Oscar!
